This method of valuation only works if you trust that your book will sell. And I know that you might be arguing with me, now, that it might not. That some books only sell 10 copies a month, not 100.
Itâs true, at that rate, it will take a lot longer to break even and move into profit and longer to get a decent hourly wage for your work.
But itâs not quite as terrible as you might think, if you are willing to look at the long haul...
Letâs say you sell an average of 10 copies a month.
10 x 2.30 is £23 per month or £276 per year.
After five years, that book will have made £1380. Okay, thatâs only a profit of £180. Divided by 80 hours, gives you an hourly rate of £2.25 for the work of writing that book.
But what would your hourly rate of âpayâ be for that book after year six? Or year seven?
Six years post-publication: £5.70 per hour
Seven years post-publication: £9.15 per hour
Eight years post-publication: £12.60 per hour
Again, these calculations are based on selling - on average - a very low number of books. Given that there is a worldwide book-buying public available to you (and assuming that you have written a readable book and given it a professional on-genre cover and sales copy), this is a conservative prediction.
It also doesnât include other things which may happen to your IP (intellectual property). You might make other formats of the book (paperback, large print, audio), you may license other rights such as translations or adaptation. You might be invited to join an anthology or collection.
To further enhance the chances of success, you could add in marketing efforts⦠Add in 10 hours to learn and implement some marketing to get you started. If you only do the bare minimum, that will be plenty (and if youâre spending lots of ongoing time and money, youâre increasing your chances of selling 100 - or more - copies per month).
